June 3 Update

Hey There Everyone,

The fishing on the Cimarron seems to be slowing a bit... Likely it's from the influx of tourists who have over fished the waters just a little bit.  But, less flashy things like pheasant tail and hare's ear nymphs seemed to work a bit better than more colorful patterns.  The water level was fairly ideal...but I wasn't getting the strikes I normally do.

I've managed to catch a few big guys in the Gravel Pit "Lakes" the last couple weeks, but the fishing slowed considerably after Memorial Day.

Fawn Lakes are apparently closed due to flooding damaging the small dam there.

I'm on Summer Break now!  So, look forward to some updates on other waters as I'm able to make some trips a bit further away from home.  Heading to Hopewell Lake tomorrow, and I hope to hook into some brookies!   My next goal is to get to the Jemez to see how those waters are doing!  After moving from Santa Fe, a day trip out there isn't practical...I've been missing those waters!

Tomorrow is the big 3-0 birthday.  Today I'm reflecting on my 20's and how this was the decade I fell in love with fly fishing.  I'm feeling blessed to be sitting here with a view of Wheeler Peak from my desk and to have countless small streams to explore up here in Northern NM.

If you have any other reports to share from the rivers in your area of NM, please comment below!

Hi Laura,
Mike again....Is your Redington Classic Trout 4-weight an 8 footer , 8.5, or 9 feet? What’s that nice blue reel that you have on your rod? Just looked at your videos, and read some more about the Rio Santa Barbara. Serenity now! :-)

Answered the rod question on YouTube--but for anybody else's benefit who might be reading comments, it's an 8.5. Very versatile length for NM waters for sure!

That blue reel is one of my favorites... it's a "Rise" from Redington. I'm not sure they sell it anymore. I think it's marked a 3/4, but it's very hefty and works great to fight bigger fish, actually!

The Santa Barbara is amazing. I don't want to advertise too heavily, but I've never seen another angler when I've hiked in there a few miles.

Hi Laura,
Yeah I guessed that was the Rise. It’s funny, I called Redington today and ask them about the glacial blue Rise, and they said yeah it wasn’t a very big seller for the smaller weight reels. I told him well I really like the color, and you can’t find them used anywhere, so it seems that they are pretty popular. I haven’t bought a rod in a couple years, I’m getting tired of my clunky 5/6 weight, so I just bought the Redington classic trout 4 weight, 8 1/2 foot, and I just picked up the Redington Zero reel today. Looking forward to actually putting on my own backing and flying line and practicing my knots before my third week of July New Mexico trip with my wife. With 3.5 million people here in San Diego and another 14 million about two hours north of here in LA, nothing beats a quiet day on a mountain stream! Thanks again for all your advice, and all my best for your new adventures in your new job up in the Taos area!
